What is the best best/most affordable standalone (hide in a closet) device for transcoding? With graphic-user interface.
Synology DS214-Play?

I suppose that yes Synology DS214-Play is the best one for transcoding, but you should be aware of that with DS214-play you can watch only one transcoded stream ( channel ) simultaneously.
Also good variants are the X86_64 NASes ( like DS713+ or more powerful )

What about the Intel Nuc? I know in comes in different variations ( http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/nuc/products-overview.html ) but will that do the job? Can it do more than one transcoding job at the time?

Can the DS713+ do more than one transcoding job at the time?
