EPG for US / Information?

Postby KenJ » Wed May 20, 2015 5:01 am

Where can I find what EPG sites support US/North America and can be used with DVBLink? Do they all require a subscription/$$$?

How does that work? I'm trying to evaluate the product to see if this is going to work for me, but I'm having a hard time figuring a few things out and frankly, the EPG aspect is the most confusing.

I was confused as well as to how EPG data works in DVBLink and DVBLink in general. I'm trying to help out a friend who is a Mac user setup DVBLink. I'm on Windows and NextPVR, and had never heard of DVBLink until I started researching PVR software for Mac. I decided to setup a test environment on Windows first to learn DVBLink first, then do the setup on my friend's Mac once I got everything figured out.

This is basically what I had to do:

DVBLink TVSource
- $56 (€49); one time cost.
- 20-day free trial.
- I got this setup and working fairly quickly. The only thing that I couldn't figure out at first was merging channels, which I figured out here:

subscription to PercData
- $30/year (€26.50/year).
- subscription for your EPG data.
- 7-day free trial.
- if you want an automated easy process, this is the way.

DVBLink EPG Loader for PercData
- $18 (€16); one time cost.
- this is a plugin to get the EPG data from PercData into DVBLink TVSource.
- 20-day free trial.

So you're looking at around $104 (€92) upfront for software & EPG data, then $30/year (€26.50/year) thereafter for the EPG data.

If you don't want to mess around with XML files and want an automated process similar to SchedulesDirect (like I use with NextPVR), then you'll need "DVBLink EPG Loader for PercData" plugin for TVSource:

This is around $18 (€16), but it comes with a 20-day free trial as well.

However, to get the actual EPG data, you need to get a yearly subscription to the PercData service which is $30/year (€26.50/year), and is basically the same thing as SchedulesDirect (the website is even the same).

You first need create an account here:

Once you sign up, PercData will send you an activation by email. Once you have the code, copy/paste on the page that came up after signing up.

Once you activate, you have a 7-day trial (so don't actually sign up and activate until you're ready to test).

After you activate, you end up on the PercData account overview page. The first thing you need to do is add a new lineup.

Click on the "Add a new lineup" link and enter your zip code. After you do this, you'll see a list of lineups to choose from. Once you've chosen your lineup, you're 7-day free trial is setup.

If you haven't already, install "DVBLink EPG Loader for PercData" by doing this:

- go to the DVBLink Configuration page:

- click on the "DVBLink Package Center" button on the bottom left.

- once this opens, click on the "EPG" loaders" button in the left panel.

- once the window updates, click on the "Install" link for "DVBLink EPG Loader for PercData" in the right panel.

- once the plugin is installed, highlight the row for "DVBLink EPG Loader for PercData", click the "Activate" button on the bottom right, click the "Activate trial" button, and then click the "Activate" button again.

Once it's activated, you need to activate your subscription for PercData. Go to Sources > EPG Sources, and click on the plus symbol for PercData. It will already be named "PercData-1" (I assume you can name it whatever you want), and then click OK.

Enter your Login and Password and click the "Check" button. Once it says "Connection test passed successfully", click the "Save" button on the bottom right.

The page will redirect back to the EPG source tab with this popup message:

"The source is now configured and will start downloading EPG data. Please be patient, it might take up to 30 minutes before all epg data is collected. Once EPG information is downloaded, you may proceed with EPG channel assignment on the 'EPG Sources' configuration page."

click on the "Take me there" button.

You will end up on Channels > EPG sources.

Over on the right, under "Available EPG sources", select "PercData-1" (or whatever you named it) in the first dropdown, and then "Local Broadcast Listings" (or whatever your lineup is called) in the second dropdown.

After this, in the left panel, highlight one channel at a time, then on the right, hover over the corresponding channel, and click the arrow icon.

Do this for each of your channel until you're finished. Once you're finished click the "Save" button on the bottom right.

It might take a bit of time to load the EPG data. Once it does (you'll have to guess), click on the "TV and Media Library" tab on the top.

If everything has gone right, you should see up to 2-weeks of EPG data, and you should be able to test scheduling and recording at this point.

The only other small issue I ran into was channel logos, which I figured out here:

Again, all this took place on Windows 8.1 as a test environment for a completely new user of DVBLink to eventually do the same setup on a Mac for a friend.
