Problem with picture quality

Postby Videonisse » Mon Feb 27, 2012 3:58 pm

When using the Connect! Server I have in most cases problem with the picture quality. I'm start getting frustrated over this as it means the family can't really use it :(

This is the issues I have recognized so far:

- Pixelization with all HD channels on iPhone/iPad (iOS 5).
- No problem with SD channels.

- Looks like "low frame rate" using IE 9 from Win 7 PCs, both SD and HD channels
- Doesn't matter if using max or minimum values for stream settings.
- The Player plugin says frame rate 25 and reports no packet loss
- No problem when watching same cahnnels using Firefox and/or Network Client on same PCs

The server is not loaded at all, CPU peaks at most at about 70% when watching several channels at the same time. Usually with one stream it's on about 10-15%.

What is likely the cause of those problems and is there any logs I can verify in my installation? :?

My server config:

Can you please do the following:
- open administrative command prompt
- type "net stop dvblink_server"
- navigate in the command prompt to the dvblink installation folder
- type "dvblink_server.exe -command_line_mode"
DVBLink server will start in command line mode. start streaming an HD channel to IPad or iphone. You will see ffmpeg's output. is there anything interesting there? Buffer underflows? other warnings?
When done, hit ctrl-c twice in the command prompt to exit dvblink server and type "net start dvblink_server"
Server: Synology DS212j, TBS5980CI (Dutch CanalDigitaal), TeVii s660 unicable Astra 28.2E, DVBLink TVSource 4.6.0, all DVBLink EPG Loaders
Clients: AsRock ION 330 Win7 MediaCenter, Samsung DLNA TV, IPad, Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus 7

OK, done. Attached is some of the info generated in the Command Prompt Window.

First I started an HD channel (History Chnl HD) and then I started an SD channel.

Hope this help :)

Did some more tests and I found out that it seems

IE9:
- HD channels runs fine if Scale Factor is set to max 720x576
- for SD channels I can scale up to 800x640 with no visible "stuttering"
- changing bitrate doesn't influence the low frame rate

iPAD2:
- Above problems was with Screen Resolution 1024x768 and highest bit rate (not Automatic)
- Less pixel errors if I use 512x384 or 341x256.
- Lower bit rate produces less pixel errors
- "Automatic" bit rate in combination with lowest screen resolution produces no pixel errors (but picture is bad due to low res...)

I usually don't want the stream to be up or down scaled so if I select an SD stream it should be 720x576 and if I select HD it should be 1280x720 (720p) or 1280x1080 (1080i). Same with frame rate, no need to change it from source.

QUESTIONS

- Would it be possible to add this to the settings? (No scaling, screen resolution size as source)
- Would it also be possible to send the stream to web browser completely without transcoding? (as with the network client I assume)

The only (known...) reason for me to change the stream is lack of bandwidth or insufficient CPU power in the client. Mainly we will use DVBLink at home at devices with that should be able to handle the original stream. Except iOS devices that I think need MPEG-2 SD streams transcoded into H.264.

EDIT: Clearified what was tested with IE9 and iPAD2

Same problem here with WHS v1 (on an Acer easyStore H341) and iPad 2.
*DVBLink for IPTV 4.5 and TVSource 4.5 on Windows Home Server v1
*Connect! Server 4.5 on WHS v1
*Network Client 4.5 on Windows 7 Media Center set as Default Recorder (Switched to XBMC on ATV2)
*iOS Clients on iPhone 4S, 3GS, iPad 2, Apple TV 2
