Recordings from encrypted channels not played back (HDCP?)

Just found out that my brandnew Samsung UE46F6500 cannot playback TS files (i.e. TV recordings created with a Synology NAS and the DVBLink recording software) which are based on encrypted channels. Programs from non-encrypted channels are not an issue at all for the F6500.

Note that - of course - I use a CI module and an official TV smart card for decrypting these protected channels on my USB receiver dongle (TBS5980) connected to the Synology NAS. Also, I can stream such channels via the Synology and DVBLink directly to the F6500. Also, it is not an issue for my Samsung C7700 to play back programs from encrypted channels. iPAD DLNA clients (e.g. 8player) also have no issues with programs from any "encrypted" channels.

Is this a bug in the latest Samsung Smart TVs or in the DVBLink recording SW, or a configuration issue? Or, is there a policy behind that from Samsung (what I do not hope)?

It is most probably an issue with that specific Samsung TV model. I suggest that you contact their support for details.

Thanks for coming back to this so quickly. Just made another observation I wanted to run by the DVBLink expert team prior to contacting Samsung.

I analyzed different TS files created by DVBLink with the tool Mediainfo. Interestingly, the data obtained via the tool from video files from non-encrypted channels is much more comprehensive than from video fils from encrypted channels (see attached txt files: The "RTLII" file represents an SD recording from a free channel (i.e. RTLII) and the file with the name "ORFIII" represents an SD recording from an encrypted channel (i.e. ORFIII).

Note that the meta data results obtained via the tool behave the same independent of the resoultion (576, 720 and 1080), i.e. recordings from free channels result independent of the resolution in more data than from encrypted channels. Also note that the resolution of SD files from encrypted channels is indicated as 480*720 in the file properties displayed by the Windows Explorer allthough I guess that they are 576*720 as well (for SD files from free channels the indication is correct, i.e. 576*720). For the HD resolutions the resolution data seems correct for both types.

So, based on the above observations can we assume that this is no indication of a mis-behaviour of DVBLink? If so, then I would go and contact Samsung.

Thanks

Can you please upload one (short) recording from the encrypted channel to rapidshare (or the likes) and paste the download link here? I would like to have a look at the transport stream myself. Thanks.

Here we go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e85kmisae8anb ... Videos.zip

The file named "Test A..." (from encrypted channel ORF1) cannot be played back , the one named "Test B..." (from ZDF) can be played back.

Thanks

The both files are good. All streams are correctly decrypted in the recording from the encrypted channel. The video/audio formats are also correctly recognized (we checked the files using TS reader).
So from the technical point of view I do not see any reason why this file should not play. Maybe the Samsung TV software is confused by the presence of CA descriptors in the PMT packet? The CAM does not remove them, but this is a common practice. I think that you should contact Samsung support on it. Please let us know here what they say. Thanks.

Just being insisting in making them look at the issue. I just have been informed that they have forwarded the issue to their development team. Keep you updated.

Update on my Samsung helpdesk request with the above issue: They have somehow confirmed that this is abnormal but told me that their development team is still analyzing.

We got 2013 Samsung TV model here and I can confirm the issue.
The problem is actually connected to the fact that the very beginning of the recording has several seconds of the encrypted material. That's why TV cannot play it back properly. This is definitely a bug in the TV software. Unfortunately not the only one.
These 2013 Samsung TV models (we have UE32F5700AW here) are buggy as hell in respect to playing back the transport stream and it will take several firmware revisions for them to stabilize.

Update on Samsung-Support request addressing the issue discussed here: Over months I have been asked to be patient, though I am pinging them freqently by mail and on the phone. To me it looks like nothing happens at all at Samsung. Has anybody raised this issue with Samsung as well and got a more promissing feedback from them?

Just got an answer from Samsung about why there are issues with playing back that kind of TS files (I have provided them with a sample file).

They said that files with an H264 - MPEG-4 AVC codec are not supported, only files with MPEG 4 SP/ASP are supported. They have also refered to page 175 of their manual under http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/conte ... F-0313.pdf. In fact, this would mean that non of the Samsung F-series model (the 2013 series) can play back those files as the specifications are the same for most of their series (even not the very expensive 9000 series would then be capable).

I am quite annoyed but also confused because TS files from DVBLink from not-encrypted channels can be played back. Are they coded differently (I would not believe that).

Based on my experience with Samsung it looks like you cannot use Samsung Smart TVs reasonably together with DVBLink. On the one hand I can't believe this. On the other hand meanwhile I am so pissed off of Samsung (you could play back those files with the C-series which is from 2010, but there you could not use fast forward and rewind...)

Any comments or recommendations?

Hm, this reply from Samsung is actually bullshit. It does not have anything to do with the video format, it has to do with the encrypted content at the beginning of the file/live TV.
I really do not know what we can do here for 2013 Samsung series support.

Hi,

I also have problems here playing back through the DVB link app.
What I recognize is that I can play DVB-S2 format but not when it is incripted when I use the app.
The strange thing is that on the same TV I can play incripted when I open a channel in the dlna window

I tlking about a basic smart tv type UE40EH5300

Hi everyone

I can confirm this behaviour also for Samsung D-Series (2011) as well. Strangely enough as Bert allready lined out, the very same channel can be viewed as "live tv stream".
I tested the recorded file with some programs and the first 7-10 seconds seem to be not ok, witch leads f.e. "Windows live Movie Maker" or "Avidemux 2.5" to crash when handling the files.
Perhaps just cropping the first 10 seconds from the file would solve the issue...

Best regards
