Problems with some HD Channels on Mac

Postby jrenn » Mon Jul 11, 2016 11:44 am

Hi,

I am currently trying out DVBLogic on my Mac Mini together with Kodi.
I have not used Kodi as a PVR before.
Viewing TV in general works, but I have problems with viewing some HD Channels.
I have the following symptoms: When I start to view one of the Channels, buffering takes place for a long time (like 10s).
Then audio starts playing, but on one Channel I get no video at all (Screen is black) on a 2nd Channel I get single frames of Video alternating with a green frame.

My setup is as follows:
HDHomerun Dual connected to DVB-C (Unitymedia in Germany). Mac Mini with El Capitan running DVBLink 6.0 trial and Kodi 16.1 together with the DVBLink PVR Addon.

With other Clients than Kodi everything seems to be working. I tried DVBLink Player and VLC.
But with Kodi, SD Channels and some HD Channels seem to be working. But with two HD Channels (ARD HD, ZDF HD) I get the problems described above.

Any suggestions what I can try?
Since everything seems to work with VLC and DVBLink Player, I assume this is related either ot Kodi or the PVR addon.
But I have no Idea how to narrow this down.

best regards

Joerg

Could it be that these channels (ARD HD, ZDF HD) is a HEVC (H.265)?

Also is the transcoding option disabled at the PVR settings?

I did some more testing last night.
There are no H.265 channels, all of them are (plain old) H.264
I addition of using Kodi on the same Mac as the dvblogic server, I tried Kodi on my Macbook Pro with the same result.

I looked at four different HD channels, two of them are working and two don't. Here are the Audio and video properties:
Channel ARD HD (not working, black screen)
    D(Audio:mp2([3],[0],[0],[0] / 0x0003), 48000 Hz, 2 channels 256 kb/s)
    P(aq:99%, Kb/s:249.83,att:0.0db)
    D(Video: h264(High)([27,[0],[0],[0] / 0x001B), yuv420p, 1280x720 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9])
    P(fr:25.00, vq0%, dc:ff-h264, Mb/s:10.95, drop:0, skip:0, pc:none)

Channel ZDF HD (not working, single frames altertaing with green frames)
    D(Audio:mp2([3],[0],[0],[0] / 0x0003), 48000 Hz, 2 channels 256 kb/s)
    P(aq:12%, Kb/s:249.22, att:0.0db)
    D(Video: h264(High)([27,[0],[0],[0] / 0x001B), yuv420p(tv,bt709), 1280x720 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9])
    P(fr:25.00, vq4%, dc:ff-h264-vda, Mb/s:10.57, drop:60, skip:0, pc:none)

    Channel ZDF_neo HD (working)
    D(Audio:ac3([6],[0],[0],[0] / 0x0006), 48000 Hz, 2 channels 448 kb/s)
    P(aq:10%, Kb/s:437.46, att:0.0db)
    D(Video: h264(High)([27,[0],[0],[0] / 0x001B), yuv420p(tv,bt709), 1280x720 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions)
    P(fr:25.00, vq29%, dc:ff-h264-vda, Mb/s:4.32, drop:84, skip:0, pc:1)

    Channel 3Sat HD (working)
    D(Audio:mp2([3],[0],[0],[0] / 0x0003), 48000 Hz, 2 channels 256 kb/s)
    P(aq:10%, Kb/s:250.04, att:0.0db)
    D(Video: h264(High)([27,[0],[0],[0] / 0x001B), yuv420p(tv,bt709), 1280x720 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions)
    P(fr:25.00, vq25%, dc:ff-h264-vda, Mb/s:5.00, drop:84, skip:0, pc:1)

The only difference I recognize is the video bitrate. On the Channels that don't work it is about twice as high as the channels that work.
But it works when I use VLC or the DVBLogic player. Therefore the Computers and network are fast enough to handle the streams.

I really have no idea what could be the problem.

I think I found a solution to my problem and a new problem at the same time! :)
I tried Kodi on a borrowed Windows 7 Laptop and this worked immediately. Just enable the DVBLink Addon and the PVR in settings.
Allo HD Channels played smoothly.

So I went back to my Mac Mini.
After disabling the accelerated H.264 decoding (VDADecoder) in the Kodi settings, the playback works.
So this means the playback of all channels works now, but it is only software decoding in CPU now, which means a lot higher CPU load.

The new questions seems to be, why does accelerated H.264 GPU decoding not work for some H.264 encoded streams? Is there a bug in the VDADecoder???
