How To: Export DVBLink recordings into ITunes format

Postby Oberon » Fri Aug 16, 2013 4:33 pm

This tutorial will show a simple way to convert DVBLink recordings into the ITunes format. This method does not use the recording files directly and is in that sense universally applicable for DVBLink server running on Windows and NAS platforms.

1. Get http URL of the recording to convert.
This can be done using two methods:
1a. open browser and type the following URL in the url bar:
Code: Select all
http://<DVBLink server IP address>:<base streaming port>/mobile/?command=get_recordedtv_m3u

For example
Code: Select all

Browser will fetch m3u file with all DVBLink recordings:
Code: Select all
#EXTINF:2703,BBC 1 London - Celebrity Mastermind
#EXTINF:8100,ITV3 - Agatha Christie's Marple (By The Pricking of My Thumbs)

1b. Find a recording to convert in the DVBLink webinterface and press play button. This will download the m3u file with the http link to a recording inside:
Code: Select all

2. Download ffmpeg (if you do not have it already).
Windows version can be downloaded for example here:

3. Convert recording to ITunes format
Open a command line prompt, navigate to the place where you have ffmpeg and execute the following:
Code: Select all
ffmpeg.exe -i <recording http url> -vcodec libx264 -acodec libvo_aacenc -ac 2 <output file with mp4 extension>

For example:
Code: Select all
ffmpeg.exe -i -vcodec libx264 -acodec libvo_aacenc -ac 2 output_file.mp4

Comments are welcome.

Volunteers to make a script that does all of the above are also welcome :)

... or just download MCEBuddy, configure it to monitor your recordings folder, choose among 10 or so profiles using handbrake/ffmpeg (or create your own), choose your destination and forget about it.
It will run as a background service.

MCEBuddy will also tag files with proper (customized via advanced commands) metadata if DVBlink stores EPG details somewhere. ( I'm only using DVBlink's mc_recorder and metadata is properly read from wtv files and written into mp4 files)

MCEBuddy is free ( although I've donated since developer is super fast adding new features )

In my opinion the most simple and fastest way to convert is using Handbrake. See
