EPG Grid GUI - DVBLink Clients

Postby Videonisse » Mon May 23, 2016 8:51 am

Issues I found testing the EPG Grid in DVBLinks own clients (Player/Viewer, ATV4 and Web (w Firefox). I compare with WMC as this is what I need to migrate from. New issues will be added as new post in this thread.

Issue 1(All clients)

To many rows are viewed at the expense of detailed EPG info for the selected program. EPG details of the selected program needs to be viewed without opening the program view. I think it should be viewed as in WMC, i.e below the grid.

This is a usability issue

Same issue reported by other user for ATV4 here: viewtopic.php?f=115&t=31230

Example (Viewer for Win)

We will put it on our todo list, but definitely not for v6 release.

I understand that this topic is about the EPG GUI. Just like topic starter compares to to the WMC layout, I compare it to one of the other layouts I know. It is merely another layout. I can sent several others, some better, some really horrible.

The EPG in clients fulfills the basic needs but a bit more information & livelier is needed. Especially on aTV (where there is lots of room) they can be a big improvement. Technically not so high priority but Look & Feel are important for end-users (especially wives and kids) that do not care about technicalities.

The colors are there. It is just that you import epg from the source, which is not translated into colored genres inside DVBLink. You/we may need to look at the categories.xml file to add missing xmltv tags to it.

There are (when one really looks carefully) tiny lines. But the overall is a gruesome grey. It's dull. Some things:

Less lines so at top or bottom there is room to display info about the selected program and that indo should change if user goes to another channel/program. Similar to the way most (modern) TV's show their EPG. Some even show the particular channel live.

Also the leftmost column (channel names) takes up too much space.

For example the info screen (when a program is selected). Sorry to say but very dull. The big DVBlink logo is unnecessary (people have bought the program, so advertising is not necessary). Show on that page the station logo at top and use the room of DVBlogo for Live showing. And not all that greyish.

The dvblink logo is only displayed if you do not have a regular program logo/
Also, if you do not like gray, you may use light color scheme. I personally prefer it to the dark one (shown below).

On iPhone I have a choice between light grey and dark grey but grey it is.

But I primarily look at the aTV client. There look & Feel is no. 1 (my opinion). I enclosed some screen prints how it looks here and it is grey all over, no logo in program info.
