DVB-C scan always "tuning failed" TBS5880 -ok with TBSViewer

Postby snicke » Wed Aug 07, 2013 5:04 pm

Hi,

When I try to do a DVB-C channel scan using my TBS5880 USB DVB-T2/T/C CI TV Box-hardware as the source, I always get "tuning failed" on all transponders I try. I'm using DVBLink Server and DVBLink TVSource both of version 4.6.0, but I've also tried to downgrade to version 4.5.2 of both products with the same result.

The transponder file is correct since:
  • I also have a TerraTec H7 card and can successfully do a channel scan using DVBLink TVSource, with the same transponder file that gives "tuning failed" with the TBS 5880 card. (the TerraTec card is not "disturbing" the setup since it doesn't work without it attached either)
  • I can do a successful channel scan using the TBS software "TBSViewer" together with the same transponder file and the TBS 5880 card. (http://www.tbsdtv.com/download/#tbs_sviewer )

My TBS 5880 card and driver is working since:
  • As mentioned above, I can do a successful channel scan using the TBS software "TBSViewer" using the TBS5880 card and I can then successfully view the channels, even the coded ones thanks to my CAM.

So something is wrong with the DVBLink software. One thing I could think of is that it seems like you have had problem with the card before when it is used for DVB-T/T2 (see this thread: https://forum.dvblogic.com/viewtopic.ph ... bcdb213f77 ) that was fixed in version 4.5.2 (?) at least according to the thread. But please note that the card is a DVB-T/T2 and C combination-card and I use DVB-C. Seems like I have a similar problem but for DVB-C use.

Other details of my system:
  • TBS5880 driver: TBS5880 DVB-T2/T/C Combined Driver (V1.0.0.5.http://www.tbsdtv.com/download/#tbs5880 ). I've also tested the "TBS5880 DVB-T2/T Windows Driver V1.0.0.5" but that version doesn't seem to be for DVB-C and the combined driver is working since I can watch TV using TBSViewer software.
  • Windows 7 pro 64 bit, 16 GB RAM, AMD Athlon II 605e 2,30GHz

I attach the log files where the problem is reproduced several times and at the bottom of the server-log it is reproduces using log level "Info" (log level "Errors and Warnings" in the beginning of the file).

Thanks.

Attaching a screenshot of the "tuning failed" issue. Each "tuning failed" happens almost "instantly" compared to when a scan works and it takes time to scan each frequency. I.e. the total scan is done very fast with tuning failed on all frequencies. Signal strength and quality is always zero.

You most probably have only dvb-t driver installed for this card (I do not know how tbs viewer works with it).
But in any case you are using dvb-t/t2 tuner frontend in TVSource and that does not work with dvb-c channels.
Try uninstalling the current driver and installing the "TBS5880 DVB-T2/T/C combined driver" from tbsdtv website. Then entry "TBS 5880 DVBC Tuner" should appear in the TVSource list. Use this frontend and it should start working.

Hi Oberon,

I bought DVBLogic software and a TBS card (since you stated that you support it) hoping to get a solution that "just works". I am a SW engineer myself but when I pay money for something I just want it to work so I can spend time on other things (that's why I pay money for it). Now I have spent a lot of hours to get this working and also sent you a very detailed error report with relevant logs above - hoping to help you as much as possible to solve the issue fast - and that annoys me and we really need to sort this out as soon as possible.

Anyway, as I wrote above I am using the combined driver (that is working for a DVB-C scan in the TBS viewer software). The TBS card is however showing up as "TBS 5880 DVB-T/T2 Tuner" in TVSource anyway. I reacted on that too but it seems as it simply is "naming negligence" from TBS and it should work with DVB-C anyway. Please look in this thread where they discuss this "naming only"-issue for another DVB-T/T2/C combined card: http://www.tbsdtv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=8133

Quote from post #4 in that thread:
">In Windows Device Manager, it only show TBS 6280 Dual DVB-T2/T tuners, is this correct?
Yea,It is ok. Later we will add some description tell user that this is a combine driver.

>In TV softwares, only show the TBS DVB-T2/T tuners too.
Yea,It will take it as DVB-T tuner, but you can scan DVB-C channel.
"

So it seems to be only a name issue since the combinded driver that I have installed obviously is working in the TBS Viewer software where I can do a successful DVB-C scan and from the comment above from the TBS support.

In TVSource when I select "Add source" I get the opition to change the tuner type to "Cable (DVB-C)" on the next page ("pleash check and change tuner type if needed"). Maybe it is here where TVSource gets confused and fail to select the DVB-C tuner? Please check my logs carefully.

Yes, it picks up the changed type and try to build the dvb-c graph and this is where it fails. So my guess was and still is that it is because of some specifics of TBS windows driver that we do not know about.
Unfortunately we do not have the card itself to test this assumption.

And now what? Did you get the card Oberon? I haven't heard anything for a while but I assume that you have contacted TBS to get a TBS5880 card to sort this out?

I only bought the TBS5880 card and your software since you are stating here http://dvblogic.com/en/products/windows ... k-tvsource that you are supporting TBS hardware. I avoided open source alternatives to be able to get support and I have obviously paid for your software so I count on that you get in touch with TBS as soon as possible, get a TBS5880 card, help them improve their driver etc and sort this issue out since you are stating that you are supporting the hardware. I'm sure TBS are happy to give you a card for free but the issue has to be sorted out in any case.

I'm willing to assist you and try things out and I have even posted the issue in the TBS forum and linked here to help you help me and you other customers, but I really think it is your responsibility to drive this issue forward from now on to a solution as fast as possible.

Hi,

I also purchased the TBS5880 earlier (6 months ago) to have a nice solution for DVB-T/T2 + CI, but it seems that there still no solution to run this combo. I tried running TV server on both Qnap TS-212 and WIndows platforms. Would highly appreciated to have a DVB T/T2 + PAY-TV solution available within soonest. (Preferrably for NAS).

For my earlier request it seemed that there was low interest for 5880, but as seen there are others + as stated in the TV server (Windows) - TBS should be supported.

I not yet ready to spend another 100€ for different Tuner with CI (DVB-T) especially just to end up with same resuls.

Thanks for any progsress on this issue in advance.

So, there are obviously more people that has problems with this TBS card that is supposed to be supported by you. I'm still waiting impatiently to get my HTPC up and running with this card and count on that you guys at Dvblogic support are coming up with a solution very soon. Neighter am I going to buy another card that might turn out not working with DVB software either even if you are stating that you are supporting it.

I have a popular website where I review gadgets and software. I need to get a solution to this problem ASAP or at least a plan and progress report on how you are working towards a solution since I'm right now plan to write a review of your software. Good or very bad is still an open question.

It has now been a month since I posted my ambitious bug report and still nog progress as I know of.

It will take time until it is supported by DVBLink. We have several open issues - not only the graph build, but also CI support.
If you need a working dvb-c/t2 solution with ci now that works with DVBLink I would recommend getting Technotrend CT2-4650 CI or DVBSky 980c/680c.

Hi Oberon,
I just bought DVBSky T680C and installed DVBLink TVSource. However, the box is not detected.
What should I do to set it up properly please?

Thanks,
Miso

You need to provide more details for use to answer your question: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=25723
If you are trying it with DVBLink on NAS platform then this tuner is not supported.

I'm sorry mate, I was tired. :)
Sure, I'm trying to use it with Synology NAS 211+ based on your recommendation. Apparently I made a mistake and this recommendation was for some other platform.
Is there any chance to get the drivers compiled and use it with Synology please?
If you do not provide the drivers, may I kindly ask you for some guidance please? I am familiar with Linux/Unix, so I can try to compile the drivers myself, I just like to have some hint.
Or is there another reason, why this device is not supported?

I just need a USB tuner with CAM module support for DVB-T and this is one of the two I found. You mentioned the other one as well. :)
Thanks.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do at the moment to make it work.
We will be releasing the GPL source code of the components that we use somewhere next week, including media_build v4l sources. Then you can use it to merge the DVBSky T680C linux driver into it (if it exists).

Thanks Oberon.

Is there any supported DVB-T tuner with CAM/CI modules feature, that works with DVBLink on Synology please?
