ServerDied on Nexus 7 gen2

Postby ashley » Sun Nov 23, 2014 8:21 am

Hi, thought everything was good with 5.1 but getting server died message as soon as stream starts on Nexus7 tablet.
Stranglely, a samsung s3 running lateat cm11 nightly is fine.
Both using hls streaming. (Rtp has general performance/reliability issues).
The Nexus7 was fine under the v5.0.
Any ideas? I'm guessing this one is an easy one to reproduce.

Anyone? My nexus 7 gen2 tablet is on stock droid 4.4.4 (build KTU84P).
I don't believe there are any issues on my side so I guess the hls changes have caused the issue.
Its a shame mpeg dash isn't used by DVBLogic instead...

Set log level to info, restart the dvblink server, reproduce the issue and attach zipped log file here.

And as far as I understand you are using dvblink server and TV source version 5.1.
What platform the server is running?

and one more question,
Is this problem occurs only when you try to view transcoded stream?

yes the issue only occurs when I set transcoding to yes.
Attached are the log files from 09:03 at Info level when I selected a channel which immediately resulted in the ServerDied message on the Nexus 7 gen2.

It seems I have not understood correctly, to clarify - after you select a channel on your android client, Is the server itself running? ( can you switch between tabs in the web configurator?)
or falls only android client dvblink? (if falls only android client - you may connect to main server again from it or need restart client itself)

Because i do not see nothing strange in the logs, only the packets being to sent and goes disconnection.
Do you try to change Transcoded stream type in android client from hls to rtp?

Can you check transcoding work at all.
In Web client, enable transcoding and try to view live TV (should start up HTML5 player)

I make sure the Android client is set to HLS streaming, and ensure transcoding is enabled.
I navigate the guide in the Android dvblink client and select any channel.
After around 2 seconds, on the Android client the message "ServerDied" appears on the Nexus 7 screen.
The server itself is alive and well, but the Nexus client hangs to the point where I have to forcibly close the DvbLink App and/or reboot the Nexus 7.

If I change the transcoded stream type to RTP then the Android client is able to watch any channel. As you'll know using RTP is generally unstable and results in regular pixelation and picture drop outs.

If I go to the web client on a say a windows 7 PC using Firefox, I see the TV guide and select any channel (after I confirm transcoding is enabled) and things work as expected.

So the only issue I have is with HLS streaming on the Nexus 7 2nd generation as HLS streaming works fine to a Samsung S3 (running CM11 nightly 4.4.4).

The only thing I could possibly do is to force my Nexus 7 onto Lollipop and see if that makes a difference?
I'm running the private beta of the DVBLink client you sent me. Could you perhaps send me a version of the thing with some sort of debugging enabled on the client perhaps?

You can update the software to version Lollipop , but dvblink client will work only one that I sent to you. Sorry, but at the moment I can not give you nothing more than to help, but I will try to reproduce the issue

great thanks! I have forced the Lollipop update to my Nexus 7 2013 model. When I side load the private beta dvblink client the streaming works using hls!
Before I side-loaded the private beta, the application wouldn't even start up as you suggested.

However, on the private beta, I find that after watching a program if I press the back button or if I scroll too quickly on the guide, then the dvblink application hangs and eventually I get a dialog box popping up saying "DVBLink isn't responding, Do you want to close it"

After restarting the DVBLink application on the tablet, I'm then able to restart it and watch another channel.
Would you prefer if I discuss issues with the private beta of the client somewhere else?
What sort of timescales are you hoping to have the private beta fixed and pushed to PlayStore?

thanks again to you and the dvblogic team - the reason why I stick with the dvblink software is because I believe you guys have the best handle on what people require from an HTPC and lets face it DVBS/S2/T/T2/C isn't going anywhere in a hurry (because of content rights) despite the hype over streaming technologies.
