Which products do I need?

Postby bobzbobz » Wed Nov 13, 2013 12:35 pm

Hi

I am a bit confused by the DVB-Link products and am not entirely sure which I need for my setup.
I hope you can guide me to the correct products and maybe an estimate of the total price.

I have:
- QNAP NAS
- DVB-C TV-signal
- DVB-C USB TV-tuner
- 2x Raspberry Pi
- 2x Windows Clients
- 1x iPad2

I want to:
- have a Raspberry Pi or NAS as the "server".
- Stream/schedule recordings and live tv from the 2 Win clients, the iPad and 1x Raspberry Pi.

Regards,
Soren

The important question - who is your TV provider? Is it listed here?:
http://dvblogic.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ# ... latform.3F

Your TV tuner will not work as DVB-C on a NAS and on a RPi.
To the best of my knowledge there are no DVB-C tuners that you can use on RPi (except for HD HomeRun).
To receive DVB-C signal on your NAS, you would need this stick:
http://dvblogic.com/en/hardware/tbs-usb-dvb-c-tv-stick/

So the recommended setup would be:
- DVBLink TVSource running on QNAP TS212 with TBS DVB-C USB stick
- Windows clients using XBMC in combination with DVBLink XBMC PVR addon
- Raspberry Pi as a client, also running XBMC in combination with DVBLink XBMC PVR addon
- DVBLink app on iPad
- (Optional) if EPG data provided with the stream from your TV provider is not good enough you may take a subscription to one of the internet EPG providers

You will need to purchase hardware and DVBLink server side software. All clients are for free.
The total price (with 50% discount on DVBLink TVSource when buying hardware) including shipping costs will be about 85 euro.

Thank you for the quick response.

What is DVBLink Connect! then? I thought that was the client-side-software for Windows.

DVBLink Connect! Server is needed only for DVBLink server running on a Windows platform. It is built into DVBLink server on NAS.
Please note that if you will use MCE as a client for DVBLink server, you will not be able to schedule recording centrally.

Okay

Will the addon for the QNAP NAS take a lot of CPU/RAM or is it only when I open a client program and tune into a TV-signal/recording.

Is it correctly understood that I will be able to watch live tv + schedule recordings from my iPad? (even away from home - if I setup port forwarding).

what i mean about the QNAP is, will there be enough system resources to run other applications/services or do you recommend dedicating the NAS to DVBlink.

Using a single tuner on this kind of NAS should be no issue.
Streaming to internet however will only work if you have substantial upload bandwidth. DVBLink cannot transcode the video into lower bitrate on the NAS platform.
