Tuning Failed - PCTV 292e

DVBLink TV Server for Ubuntu linux is discussed here!

Tuning Failed - PCTV 292e

Postby brownbr01 » Sat Dec 13, 2014 9:04 pm

In installed Ubuntu 14.04 and DVBLink 5.1 I can see the Card as a source PCTV 292e

When I Scan all UK Channels I get Tuning Failed on all channels.
I know the kit is ok as I installed openelec and the card works fine in the same kit on this version of Linux under tvheadend. P.S. tvheadend also does not see channels(Services) so I think it is a driver issue.
I have also upgraded the kernel on my Ubuntu to 3.17 and still no difference.

Any ideals anyone?

Re: Tuning Failed - PCTV 292e

Guys I had the same problem. I will try to explain my solution as clear as possible (I cannot explain stuff well, but I am so excited that I make an account for this forum so just to share my experience).

Distribution: Ubuntu 14.04 server
Kernel: 3.16.0-031600-generic #201408031935 SMP Sun Aug 3 23:56:17 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

First of all i bought my 292e today and I had the same issue w_scan either scan was failing when I was scanning.
1. I installed v4l (Before that it was saying that linux was finding the drivers but it wasnt like that... I think they were wrong)
1.1 restart
BAD -> 2. I downloaded the firmware from https://github.com/OpenELEC/dvb-firmwar ... r/firmware for my si2168-02... well this was the wrong firmware and I had kernel panic
3. I have found this website http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmware/Si2168/ and I have downloaded si2168-02.fw from there. The problem was it was saying Firmware download failed -22
4. I checked dmesg and inside was that they dont need si2168-02.fw the system wanted now si2168-b40-01.fw
5. Ive download it from the same website http://palosaari.fi/linux/v4l-dvb/firmware/Si2168/. Then copied to /lib/firmware
6. sudo w_scan was working and it was finding channels

So please if you have some other question write here I will visit this forum the next few days to help you

I got my 292e to work as well. It was also a firmware issue with me. The firmware i got was corrupt !!
I can get all the SD channels working. I cannot get the DVB-T2 to work, so i cannot get any of the HD channels.
I am based in the UK.

Have you got the DVB-T2 aspect to work ?

I found this intriguing, "TV standard does not lock (tune fails). So if application tries to tune DVB-T2 channel using DVB-T request, driver first tunes using DVB-T standard, then detects it does not work, then driver makes another tuning attempt using DVB-T2 standard and finally it succeeds. Application could not even know it is actually using DVB-T2, unless it does not check it after the successful tuning."

Could this be the issue others are experiencing. Basically if the application is acting dumb, then the 292e will never pick up DVB-T2.

This is the known issue with PCTV 292e.
The driver from V4L requires the explicit declaration of what standard is scanned: DVB-T or DVB-T2.
The driver from DVBLink for NASes automaticly scans DVB-T and DVB-T2.
Unfortunately it will not be solved in the short term.

Question:
Is this due to the complexity involved? or a question of not wanting to spend money on a platform that doesn't have such wide use ?

I'm personally just trialing DVBLogic to see if I could get HD channels working. Ive tried MythTv and TVheadend aswell and they don't work either. I thought maybe with DVBLogic being the paid option that they may sorted this out by now.

http://blog.palosaari.fi/2014/09/linux- ... blems.html

Based on the blog from the guy who actually developed the drivers it would appear that he is waiting for the software developers to update themselves to truly support DVB-T2.

the lack of HD support for the 292e is stopping me from purchasing. Is there any kind of work arounds? Can you be anymore specific with the timescales?

(I can tune SD channels fine, I have drivers and firmware installed)

As far as i know to solve this error is not planned at all, at least by dvblogic.
Because on Ubuntu all tuners use V4L drivers ( maybe there will some fixes from them )
This all i can say at the moment about it.

So to summarise. dvblogic sell a tuner on their website, under false claims. It does tune into HD channels, just not with their software. Or with any plan to fix it.

Good work dvblogic.
