Server vs Desktop OS

Postby brianjg » Sun Mar 13, 2016 11:53 am

So I need to rebuild my main HTPC (again) due to more failing hardware. I have an old HP ML110 G6 server with 12GB RAM. My plan is to run that headless in the attic with my tuners, etc and just use kodi as the front end on intel NUCs.

As I have an MSDN subscription I can load either desktop or server, its running windows 10 right now.

I know I need to use the BDA hack. From a purely DVBLink/Media streaming/Transcoding point of view is there any benefit running a server OS over the desktop version?
HP ML110 G6; Win81; Xeon x3430; 16GB RAM; 1TB SSHD; 3TB SSHD RAID5; DVBS s952; Hauppauge HVR-1300; 2 X Gigabyte Brix 3000 (LibreElec 7.0); DVBLink Server, TVSource, EPG loader for DigiGuide; Emby; Sonarr.

I guess better to use the desktop version, as the server version is not fully supported (you know about that) and i do not think that you will get benefit from the server version, except head ache.

I agree, desktop must be easiest solution. As DVBLink are installed as service you don't need to be logged in to work so the DVBLink server works well as headless as well. If you go for Kodi as client (vs WMC with mc_recorder) then you don't need WMC on the server either and could then use Win 10. Security clients (AV, FW etc) are also much cheaper for client vs server.

Thanks guys for your input, I was kind of leaning that way but glad to have a second opinion.

Easiest headless server:
Windows 10 Home with Teamviewer installed for maintenance tasks.

No need for monitor, keyboard or mouse after installation of Teamviewer.

Rock solid setup as long as HW works.
Server: Antec ISK 600, Core i3 3225, 4GB, 1TB+1TB, Windows 10, 2 x PCTV Triplestick T2 HD USB
Clients: Windows 10 PC, Nvidia Shield Tablet, Android TV box to 46" Sony TV, Microsoft Lumia 950 XL, Emby media server (on all platforms)
